A rare original design Indy from the first year of production. A car that spent a lot of its life in Sicily, and now belongs to a car collector in Northern Italy.

 

Background and history.

 

The car was first registered on March 13th 1970 in Lucca (Tuscany). At this moment little is known about its early owner. We are hoping this might be something we can discover once the car is within the market ?

 

In 1983 the car moved to Catania, Sicily with the new owner. In this region of Italy there are many old cars collectors and of course thanks to the favourable climate cars are generally well preserved. Other than some wear to the paint and interior due mainly to the sun, this car is excellent order, and largely original.

 

Owners

 

Based on the registration document (Carta di Circolazione) after moving to Catania the car was sold on in February 1989 to a lady. She owned the car for just over 2yrs and sold it in April 1991 to another lady who kept the car until May 2000. The car was then sold to a well known ASI (Automotoclub Storico Italiano) member who kept it for over 15yrs, until October 2015, when the current owner acquired it. The owner of 15yrs was well known by a friend of the current owner. As they are both collectors of rare classic cars the recent history is somewhat better known. During the 15yrs with the previous owner, he reportedly drove the car regularly, and used the car for longer trips. During this period the car gave him very little trouble and certainly seems to be all the better for it.

 

The car is now showing a recorded figure of just below 84,000kms.

 

Paperwork/History

 

There is not a huge amount of paperwork with the car, typically Italian…

 

The Carta di Circolazione, was left with the car by the former owner, plus the old Foglio Complementare (The document on which was registered until the ’90 the ownership of cars) and copy of the Certificato di Proprietà; The new document showing the ownership. There are also a few papers concerning minor works done on the car and the Identity Certificate (Certificato di Identità) issued by ASI.

 

This Certificate reports that the car was manufactured in 1969. We presume one of the last of that first years production.

 

Mechanical Condition

 

We have not inspected the car, but the following is information from the current owner. He is a collector of many classic cars and we feel his knowledge of the cars, and his reputation warrant this overview to be considered honest and fair. Of course any sale can be subject to a mechanical checkover should this be deemed required.

 

The car is in very good mechanical state; the engine runs perfectly and smoothly and so does the transmission. The clutch is fine and the gearbox as is common needs just a few minutes to get the oil warmed and then changes through the box effortlessly. The brakes also work perfectly: considering the era and the weigh of the car, it stops in surprisingly short distances.  The reminder of the cars age is the lack of power steering assistance. Only a few of the first series cars were fitted with it.

 

After purchasing the car, between late 2015 and into 2016 I did quite a lot of works to improve its reliability and it was gone through in detail to make sure nothing was required, a recomisioning if you will.

 

Many hoses were changed including fuel and brakes ; dampers were replaced, carburation cleaned was tuned and new plugs and air filter were installed.  Some electrics were also revised and replaced as required.

A new battery was fitted in June 2018.

 

At motorway average speed of 120-130km/h I have measured a consumption of 13,5 – 14  litres/100 km, quite reasonable for that kind of car of the pre-oil crisis era with  a big V8 engine with four large double carburettors.

Bodywork

 

The body is in good though not perfect/concours condition; there is no evidence of rust, but the paintwork shows signs of ageing especially on the front end – bonnet and its flanks/wings.

 

The car was  certainly repainted, presumably in the ’90’s and the quality of the work is ok, but with the time since painting, and improvements in technical ability in the 21st century, it could now be improved upon of course. However, as you can see from the photos, taken in December, the car presents well as is.

 

Interior

 

The interior is original and shows a clear patina; some work was done after the current owner bought the car to improve the leather’s general condition, but  front the seats and the driver’s in particular show clearly the signs of the 49yrs of age.

 

The back seats are in much better condition as with all 2+2 coupes, being rarely used.
